Taking risks safely
Duration 3 Hours
Team Professional Development
“A ship is always safe at shore but that is not what it's built for.”
Albert Einstein’s words indicate that if we want to achieve excellence and innovation, we will need to take risks. But instead, in these disruptive and uncertain times, we may concentrate on a different mantra: conform to procedures, maintain organisational stability and safeguard public value.

Yet the government wants us to be bold in our pursuit of performance: “Public Sector organisations cannot be risk averse and be successful. Risk is inherent in everything we do to deliver high-quality services.” says the Treasury in the Orange Book.
The key is to take risks safely. Leaders can join this workshop to learn how to manage and harness risk - to ensure that they can innovate and take opportunities through actions which are calculated, approved and justified.
You will use a range of tools and models to explore your own personal appetite for risk, understand the organisational context and to manage risk safely. You’ll find out the steps you need to replace inaction with innovation, to be both cautious and creative, and to scrutinise progress to enable timely recalculation and recalibration.
You’ll know why and how to promote a just culture and establish the psychological safety that your team needs in order to develop a culture that takes risks safely in pursuit of innovation and excellence.
